Santorini, Greece

The island of Santorini is probably the foremost intriguing island of Ellas. Simply its name is a lot of than enough to unfold in mind beautiful sunsets and scenery, white, red and black sand beaches, impresive traditional homes, views of the Volcano and and lively night life. All the above, allong with the remains of the antiquity and the myth of the Lost mythical place justify the words that the tourists confirm this glorious island.

The active volcano of Santorini erupted in the 50's and ruined many cities of the island. Santorini is also known as Thira and its capital is that the city of Fira. It is a really touristy island and so rather pricey.

The locals live mainly off agriculture and touristry. The islands largest export product is soil; 2.000.000 tons a year are used all over the globe, mainly to create concrete. The Suez channel was engineered with this concrete for example.

Most holidaymakers stay wherever the beaches ar, Kamari and Perissa, but these places extremely do not represent the island's superb distinctiveness.

If you can, you should attempt to keep in Fira, Imerovigli or Oia, the towns on the cliffs, which ar terribly stunning and full of very little cafes, shops and places of interest. There is a bus that goes to the beaches everyday, and it is far better to be within the towns within the evening and on the beaches throughout the day. If you stay in Monolithos you can have a lot of peace and quiet.

Approaching the island by boat the immediate impression obtained is this may be a Greek island unlike the other. The island of Santorini was formed out of the volcanic rock from the volcanic eruption in 1660 before Christ. The central part of the volcano sank into the ocean resulting in the emergence of Santorini itself and also the little neighbour islands of Thirasia, Palaia and Nea Kameni close by.

Today, Santorini is the only underpopulated volcanic crater (volcano cauldron) within the world. Unlike different islands in Ellas, the towns and villages sit densely on prime of the large cliffs of the volcanic crater and from a distance appear as if snow capping the soaring mountain ace. The coloured strata of the volcanic rock of those cliffs ar spectacular in themselves: chocolate brown, rust red, yellow ochre, white and cream. The geological individuation but is not the sole factor that produces Santorini a special vacation destination.
